The biological meaning of an animal, or human is one that has completely developed. The term adult is employed in relation to human beings to refer to the legal and social aspects. In contrast to a non-adult or "minor", a legal adult has attained the age of majority. They are regarded as an independent, self-sufficient person and responsible. The word "major" can be used to describe these individuals. There is a general belief that the minimum age that a person becomes a legal adult is 18. It is possible for this to vary depending on legal rights and countries as well as psychological development.

At the point that a person reaches physical and intellectual maturity, this is known as adulthood. It usually starts with 21, which is the average age for adults. The middle age is approximately 40 and then it is followed by an older age of around 60. Early adulthood begins between the ages of 18 and 30. Mid-life adulthood begins around in the 30s to 60s. The transition to late adulthood begins around the middle of 60s. Early adulthood is the stage of physical maturity that is at the time we turn 20 to 40 years older. We are a little taller and heavier can, however, slightly increase. In early adulthood our physical abilities are at their peak. These include muscle strength and speed of reaction.
